Grok 4.8 is not out yet. The cipher story is the real one.

Hey friends!! You keep asking me which AI to pick, so here is the blog going forward. One post at a time!! Whatever mattered this week, in plain words. I read the thing, you get the short version :)

Nick and Jack over at the Stacked Podcast covered two stories yesterday. Here is where I landed on both.

1. Grok 4.8 is still in the oven

Elon Musk says Grok 4.8 finishes pretraining this week. Note what that means. It is not out. No price, no demo, no product you can touch. It is a heads-up that another big model is coming, right on schedule, one month after the last one.

My take, from thirty years of hotels: when the vendor says next week, you keep running the tools you have. The follow-up work in your business does not wait for Grok 4.8. The twenty-dollar options already answer email. That gap closed months ago.

2. A 370-year-old cipher, cracked in 44 minutes

The other story is the one I would tell a class. Claude Fable 5.1 reportedly solved a cipher that had sat unsolved for 370 years, and it did it in 44 minutes. Old letters, dead language, centuries of people staring at it. A model read it like a Tuesday crossword.

If it can do that, it can read your messy inbox, your scanned receipts, your half-written quotes. That is the everyday version of the same muscle. No hype needed. The thing reads.

What I would do this week

Pick one pile of paper you hate. Bring it to class, or book the assessment. We map it, we build one lane, you approve everything before it goes out. Small start. Small starts stick.

Feel free to bring questions to the next library session. No question is too small, no judge here. I asked all of them myself, at fifty, with no tech background at all :)
